Craft in Dialogue

'Craft in Dialogue' - Inches Carr Trust

Exhibition celebrating the work of all of the makers who have received craft development bursaries from the Inches Carr Trust since it was established in 1996. Including a diverse range of work and showcasing many of Scotland's leading craft practitioners.

The purpose of the bursaries is to help established artists develop their skills or research a particular aspect of their practice.

Twenty-seven leading Scottish makers, all recipients of the annual Inches Carr Trust Craft Bursary Award, are being brought together in an exciting exhibition at Dovecot Studios celebrating Scotland's contemporary craft including jewellery, silversmithing, glass, sculpture, ceramics, stone carving and tapestry.

In 1997 the Inches Carr Trust, a private charitable trust based in Edinburgh, initiated a new annual bursary scheme for Scottish makers. The Craft Bursary is aimed at active, professional, mid-career makers and offers talented individuals valuable professional research and development time.

Works include Unknown, a moving installation of engraved glass soldiers by Alison Kinnaird MBE reflecting on the experience of war; a series of delicate, carved cast and gilded porcelain boxes by Andrea Walsh; and Peter Chang's extraordinary, bold recycled plastic mosaic jewellery, drawings and objects with their roots in fantasy and pop culture.

Ideas explored through the exhibition highlight ways in which contemporary objects can :

  • Make links to our past in new ways (Dorothy Hogg's work based on her residency at the V&A in London)

  • Reveal the impact of virtual technologies on the handmade (Ann Marie Shillito's Haptic project)

  • Offer reflections on environmental and social concerns (Keiko Mukaide's glass and photography project; Jane Kelly's leaf installation)

  • Open up debates on the relationship between the personal and the social (Archie McCall's Kiln images; Deirdre Nelson's residency images)

Superbly made objects in metal and glass are balanced by fluid improvisations with cut paper, sketches and drawn thread. Each exhibitor has taken their own approach, with some including photographs and information on processes of thoughts and making and others presenting only finished works. Craft in Dialogue is a richly layered exploration of making and thinking which opens out our understanding of what the culture of craft encompasses in 21st century Scotland. The exhibition is curated by Amanda Game and supported through the generosity of the Inches Carr Trust, in association with the Dovecot Foundation.

"Annica and David's work is a beautiful piece and we're delighted that it will be going on show as part of A Passion for Glass. Dan Klein and Alan J Poole’s collection is of great international significance and includes some exquisite works by a raft of exceptionally gifted makers from across the world. We hope that as many Borderers as possible will come and see this beautiful work, some of which was made right on their doorstep."
